An Efficient Auralization of Edge Diffraction

چکیده
INTRODUCTION This paper contributes to the modeling and auralization of diffraction which is one of the most important acoustic phenomenon caused by the wave nature of sound. However, most room acoustic modeling algorithms rely on geometrical acoustic techniques which completely neglect the diffraction. The reason for this is that such methods as ray-tracing [1], beam-tracing [2] and image-source method [3, 4] assume that sound propagates as light, i.e., the wavelength of the sound is much shorter than the dimensions of the reflecting objects. In this paper we show how diffracted sound components can be added to the image-source method and how an efficient auralization of diffracted components can be realized.

This paper presents evaluation results of parametric auralization system. The auralization method, based on imagesource and edge diffraction modeling, is briefly overviewed and evaluation of the auralization quality is performed both subjectively and objectively. As a case study the auralization of a lecture room is considered with three different musical stimuli. The evaluation results show th...

In order for auralization to better replicate the binaural listening experience in a space, acoustic scattering in the room impulse response (RIR) must be more accurately calculated. Three models are discussed and used in room computations and auralizations: Lambert scattering, edge-diffraction models based on the Biot-Tolstoy-Medwin technique, and boss models for protuberances on reflecting su...

We present an auralization algorithm for interactive virtual environments with dynamic objects, sources, and listener. Our approach uses a modified image source method that computes propagation paths combining direct transmission, specular reflections, and edge diffractions up to a specified order. We use a novel multi-view raycasting algorithm for parallel computation of image sources on GPUs....

Realistic modeling of reverberant sound in 3D virtual worlds provides users with important cues for localizing sound sources and understanding spatial properties of the environment. Unfortunately, current geometric acoustic modeling systems do not accurately simulate reverberant sound. Instead, they model only direct transmission and specular reflection, while diffraction is either ignored or m...
